The May Show, a juried art exhibit, will return to Gualala Arts Center for the second year with an opening Friday, May 6 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. through May 30. The purpose of this exhibit is to showcase outstanding visual art and artists without regard to the type of media.

The exhibit is being organized with the advice of a number of local artists locally and from the Bay Area and with input from several museum directors and curators. When the exhibit's format was being developed, the first question that needed to be answered was "what is art and what kinds of visual art should be allowed into the show." Is art just painting? Sculpture? Photography? What about woodworking? Multimedia?

This was not an easy question to answer last year, but the committee concluded that again, artists would be allowed and encouraged to enter anything they deem visual art. The pieces selected for the exhibit will depend only on the quality of the work and the juror's concepts of art. Again there will be no fixed media categories and no restrictions on entries, other than size of the pieces and no film, installation or performance art.

Stephanie Hanor The distinguished juror for the first May Show was Lucinda Barnes, Chief Curator of the Berkeley Art Museum. This year's juror will be Stephanie Hanor, Assistant Dean and Director of the Mills College Art Museum. She graduated from Tulane University, received an M.A. from the University of Minnesota, and a PhD. in Art History from the University of Texas at Austin.

Ms. Hanor began her career as Assistant Curator of American and Contemporary Art at the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin and, prior to coming to Mills College, was the Senior Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego.

She has organized numerous exhibitions by a number of emerging as well as internationally known artists. At San Diego, she curated a major traveling exhibition devoted to contemporary Latin American and Latino art. Her scholarly interests include exploring the relationship of sound and vision.

In addition to judging the show, Ms. Hanor will give a talk entitled Soundwaves: The Art of Sampling as part of the Gualala Arts Lecture Series the night before the opening.

Artists enter their work only by digital images. The deadline for the entries will be February 1, 2011, and artists will notified of the juror's decisions in March 2011. There will be monetary prizes for the best three works selected for the show; first prize $1,000, second prize $750, third prize $500.

The opening reception for the public and participating artists will be on Friday, May 6, 2010 and the exhibit will run through May 30, 2011.

Registration forms may be downloaded or picked up at Gualala Arts Center.
