Esther Munger - Paint, Drawings and Prints
Oil paint has luminosity absent in any other paint; it is my favorite though I work in a variety of media. My paintings are born in the landscape I experience and in the people I meet or photograph. They grow up in my studio, the product of many layers, producing a picture that reveals and implies more than its surface.
I manipulate the drying speed of my paint as well as color, form, line and texture to achieve my results and often, though not always, work on a painting over many months and even years. My landscape work tends more to the abstract than my figurative work, though the goal of neither is to be realistic. When working with the figure I relate to what the body is doing and expressing, or to the energy of the movement or activity. I always hope to engage the viewer in a personal way through thought, feeling or contemplation.
I love art and have studied it my entire life. My formal schooling was at Hunter College and The University of California Berkeley where I earned a degree in Art with a specialization in Education, subsequently teaching students from pre-school age through retirement.
My work is available for purchase at my studio or on commission. My drawings, prints and paintings can be found in private collections in Boston, New Hampshire, the Santa Ynez Valley, the Bay Area and The Sea Ranch.
I have exhibited at the Elverhoj Museum in Solvang, Café Arrivederci in San Rafael, participated in the Wildling Museum juried Studio Tour and for the past several years in the NCAG Studio Discovery Tour.
