Arts License Plate was the first license plate in the nation
whose revenue solely benefited the arts. With more than 114,000
plates sold since 1994, the Arts License Plate has raised more than
$6 million for arts education efforts. An extensive directory of California artists, writers, musicians, and artisans of myriad talents. Gifted people who offer their creative work for others to enjoy are invited to be included in these pages. The California Arts Council (CAC), a state agency, was established in January, 1976 to encourage artistic awareness, participation, and expression; to help independent local groups develop their own arts programs; to promote employment of artists and those skilled in crafts in the public and private sector; to provide for exhibition of artworks in public buildings throughout California; and to enlist the aid of all state agencies in the task of ensuring the fullest expression of our artistic expression. The purpose of CityArt is to enhance the artistic flavor and cultural dynamic of our community by providing a physical location and a psychological and intellectual environment in which artists in this community and beyond may exhibit their work in the visual arts and by encouraging working and emerging artists to develop and discover avenues of expression through the creation, formation and participation of community exhibitions. Mendocino Artists is a collective of painters, sculptors, jewelers, glass artists, potters, photographers, fabric artists, weavers, beaders, candle-makers, and haberdashers in Mendocino County. The mission of the Mendocino Arts Council is to introduce, promote and benefit the arts in order to enrich the quality of life for the citizens of the county. Objectives include expanding opportunities for artists and arts organizations, supporting art education, promoting the role of the arts in the local economy and increasing public awareness of the value of the arts. North Coast Artists' Guild (NCAG) was formed in 1997 as an affiliate of Gualala Arts to better serve working artists in the Mendocino and Sonoma coastal communities, from as far south as the Russian River to as far north as Little River. There are currently more than 150 members. The goal of Pacific Piecemakers Quilt Guild is to promote quilting along the Sonoma/Mendocino coast. Pacific Piecemakers Quilt Guild offers monthly educational programs, lectures, and workshops for quilters of all skill levels as well as opportunities for members to give back to their community using those skills. The Redwood Coast Chamber of Commerce provides a leadership role in coordinating business advocacy and development; sponsors and supports community events and promotes tourism with an effective professional program that benefits both the members and the entire coastal community. The non-profit, non-partisan organization fosters and promotes those activities that enhance the economy, preserve the environment, and provide opportunities for gainful employment and cultural satisfaction to the citizens of the area. The Annual Studio Discovery Tour offers a self-guided tour of local artists' studios each Labor Day weekend. It affords visitors and art enthusiasts the opportunity to see art in the making in the artist's own creative space. The Sea Ranch (TSR) Thespians began in 1998 as a loosely formed group of theater buffs, offering a September production of "Murder at Rutherford House" in the Knipp-Stengel Barn. Audiences liked what they saw, demanded more, and now it appears that The Sea Ranch Thespians have a permanent role to play in this isolated coastal community.
