Mask making materials |
I have been making masks from a variety of materials since I was an undergrad over 40 years ago. I've worked with wood, clay, plaster, stone, wax, bronze and sheet metal, just to name a few materials, but my favorite medium has been in paper in all its flexibility, adaptability and beauty.
In this workshop I will show you how to make two types of masks: one using a cast paper face as a starting point and a second in "fabrication" from flat paper and card board building an armature on which you will collage, paint and elaborate the mask forms.
I will give you a bit of history of the art form, but most of the time will be spent evolving your creative alter egos, characters or abstract expressions in a wonderfully diverse and inventive medium. While I will provide most of the materials you'll need, it will be helpful to gather up as much of the
list of materials
that I have provided as you can. This will also aide you in making more personal and individual works of art.
About the Instructor
Bob Rhoades was raised in upstate NY and South Carolina. He received his bachelor's degree from Duke University and his Master of Fine Arts from the University of New Mexico. He moved to California from North Carolina in 1970 to begin his art teaching career. Teaching full time since 1970 and retiring in 2009, Professor Rhoades has taught at several schools in California, but his longest appointment (29 years) was as the Art Department Coordinator for the College of the Redwoods, Mendocino Coast campus.
In his many years teaching for the college, Bob taught figure drawing many semesters. In this class portraiture was an important and favorite subject.
Making masks has also been one of his primary art forms which worked its way into assignments in sculpture, papermaking and color and design classes he taught for the college.
For the last 12 years Bob and his wife Bronwyn have been leading Art & Culture trips through Creekwood Studios to Europe including England, France, Czechoslovakia, Italy and Spain. His work has long been inspired by travel especially to Asia where he studied printmaking and papermaking. A particular interest in masks from diverse cultures found in Bali, Mexico, Japan and Italy has also played a major role in his art forms.
