Grevy's zebra Those attending the talk on Monday, May 4, 2009 will learn the intriguing story of how Grevy's zebras and greater kudu came to graze on the rolling hills of Point Arena, a half world away from their home on Africa's savannahs. Speakers Frank and Judy Mello founded the B. Bryan Preserve in 1998 and their original herd of 11 animals now has grown to 60.

It all started when Frank was introduced to Sable antelope on a trip to West Texas and he developed a desire to protect and study these graceful creatures. Together with his wife Judy, he founded the B. Bryan Preserve on family land in her native state, Mississippi. Then, when Judy moved her job to Northern California in 2004, the couple purchased a hundred acre ranch near Point Arena and relocated the preserve.

Now retired, Frank Mello cares for the collection that includes Roan antelope, greater kudu, Sable antelope, Grevy's and Hartmann Mountain zebra. They also offer educational tours of the preserve and have The Carriage House guest cottage for overnight visitors.

Actively committed to the breeding and preservation of African hoof stock, the preserve offers a haven for endangered animals, many of who came from zoos or private organizations. They are not rescue animals and remain relatively wild in an open environment.
