You can get an early preview of the North Coast Artists' Guild Studio Discovery Tour by stopping at The Sea Ranch Lodge Front Gallery to preview the work of Studio Discovery Tour artists who are competing for their work to be on the front cover of the tour catalog. One of the most exciting events of the opening evening, Friday May 16, will be the unveiling of the winners of the Studio Discovery Tour Catalog Cover Competition. The exhibit will continue through July 13.

The objective in the competition is to come up with the "strongest" image(s), that is, the one(s) that will be most likely to grab positive attention and make a person want to pick up the Studio Tour brochure and look through it.

The jurors chosen for this daunting task are a nice mix of graphic professionals, artists and people in the art industry, both local and out of the area. Locals include Ron Bolander, professional photographer, Hall Kelley, graphic designer and owner of Hall Kelley Organization, and Jane Reichhold, artist/poet, editor of Lynx and former editor of Sketches. Robert Marcus of Robert Marcus Graphics is from Sebastapol. From Los Angeles are Connie Nartonis Thompson, oil painter and associate producer of Stone Circle Picture and Katie Nartonis, jewelry designer, business manager of the 20th Century Decorative Arts Department of Bonhams, auctioneers and appraisers.

Thirty NCAG members are vying for this prestigious cover page position in the Studio Discovery Tour catalog. Each juror has received a digital JPEG copy of all the entries, no names, just file numbers. The entries were judged with additional points given to help avoid ties. The pieces that received the most points will be on the cover.

This year, the Studio Discovery Tour will be August 30, 31 and September 1, 6, 7. The Tour always draws exceptional artists who will open their creative studios to the public. Colorful and intriguing artists from potters and glass blowers, weavers and paper workers to painters, sculptors, wood turners and photographers participate. Every year, new artists join the tour, keeping the experience fresh and full of surprises. In 2007, over 40 artists were on the tour; this year 46 artists will open their studios to the public.

A free full-color catalog will help you make the most out of your tour. It contains a description of each artist, along with a detailed map and directions to each studio. You will be able to pick up extra catalogs with maps beginning in June. Catalogs will also be available at the Dolphin, Gualala Arts Center and other local businesses after that date.

To receive your catalog by mail, so that you can begin planning your own personal tour, e-mail the Tour Director, Scott Chieffo, at scott@gualalaarts.org, or call the Gualala Arts Center at 707-884-1138. Once the catalog has been published, you can download the pdf version and preview individual artists at the official Studio Discovery Tour website, www.Studio-Tours.com.

In downtown Gualala, the Dolphin Gallery will have an exhibit which will preview most of the participating Tour artists from August 30 through October 1. This gives you an opportunity to see an overview of the art so that you can check out artists you are particularly interested in. This is very helpful if your time is limited. The Dolphin is an associate gift shop and gallery of Gualala Arts. Along with the Studio Tour artists you will find additional work by other artists.
